This piece brings together two celebrated Indian crafts—block printing and Kantha embroidery—each with a rich legacy of artistry and storytelling.

Block printing, a centuries-old technique, uses hand-carved wooden blocks to imprint intricate patterns on fabric. By the 17th century, it had influenced global textile traditions, shaping French designs like Toile de Jouy, originally printed with Indian wooden blocks before copperplate printing emerged to facilitate mass production.

Kantha embroidery, originating in West Bengal and Bangladesh, is known for its long-running stitches that add texture and depth. Traditionally layered over block prints, it breathes new life into fabrics, turning everyday pieces into works of art.

While florals are a classic backdrop for these crafts, at Vaarsa London, we reimagined tradition—introducing geometric and animal motifs for a fresh, versatile aesthetic.
