A five-piece Kansa thali set, hand-tempered in India. Plate, two katoris, tumbler and spoon. Sized small, finished smooth, and weighted enough to sit steady on a table.

Made for weaning, and for annaprashan, the rice ceremony. The kind of plate a baby eats their first solid meal from, and keeps eating from for years after.

It works for adults too, as a single-portion thali or a chai-and-snack tray. Limited-edition pre-order, ships in four to six weeks.

Product Story

Kansa is not cast. The metal is heated to a red glow, hammered into shape, quenched, and heated again, a process that cannot be mechanised. Each of the five pieces in this set is shaped and finished by hand, which is why they sit together as a family rather than a manufactured run.

Kansa has been used as tableware across the subcontinent for centuries, long believed to keep food at temperature without leaching, and gentle enough for first foods. The 78:22 ratio of copper to tin is the proportion described in classical metalwork texts, and the proportion still used today by the smiths who make this set.

A weaning thali like this one has been part of Indian households for generations. Annaprashan, the rice ceremony, marks a baby’s first taste of solid food, and a Kansa thali is often the plate it is served on. We did not invent the form. We brought it back to the table.

This is the first complete Kansa set on Vaarsa, and the foundation piece for a wider Kansa range coming through the year.

Care Instructions

Hand wash only with mild soap and a soft sponge. For a deeper clean, mix Pitambari powder with a little water to form a paste, rub gently in circular motions, rinse thoroughly, and dry immediately with a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive pads, steel scrubbers, or the dishwasher. A faint grey patina is the metal’s natural response to oils and acidic foods, and is food-safe. The more the set is used, the calmer the surface becomes.
